Transfer Stations

Transfer stations are both convenient and environmental. Part of the thinking behind transfer stations is that materials are sorted at the station and then sent out. This helps the environment by minimizing the number of trips to landfills and also reduces the number of large truckloads needed. Furthermore, as transpiration is done more efficiently after waste is sorted into groups. There are fifteen transfer stations located in Lane County, we will list a few below:

  • The Creswell is located at 34293 Cloverdale Road.
  • The Glenwood is located at E 17th Ave. in Eugene.
  • The Low Pass is located at 22377 Hwy 36 Cheshire.
  • The McKenzie Bridge is located at 55805 McKenzie Hwy. in Blue River.
  • The Rattlesnake is located at 82572 Rattlesnake Rd. in Dexter.
  • The Swisshome is located at 13711 Hwy 36.
Using a Transfer Station

Many experienced dumpster rental customers like to separate their recycling and then either process their recycling through traditional means or haul their recycling into a transfer station or other facility. There are two reasons to do this. The first is to make sure that items that should be recycled are not missed in the waste organization process. The second reason is that recycling as you go makes more space available in your bin. When you rent a bin, you are paying for the processing of waste. However, most city and state governments subsidize this process to incentivize recycling. As such, it is smart not to waste space in your bin for items that, in some cases, can even bring in a couple of bucks.

Transfer stations are also good for items in addition to recycling. For example, some people have blue items that take too much space in the dumpster and the renter prefers to drop the item, such as a mattress, at the transfer station. In other cases, you may simply have a little extra waste that you want to get rid of. Finally, you might have items that are slippy not allowed in a bin, such as appliances, electronic goods, medicines and sharps, and hazardous waste.

Some items do cost money to process at a transfer station, depending on what they are. Most things can be processed for free. But other items do cost money.

Items that you can recycle for free at a transfer station in Lane County include things like:

  • Aluminum, reusable items, and scrap metal.
  • Corrugated cardboard, newspapers and advertisements, mixed paper, and shredded paper.
  • Plastic milk jugs, glass bottles, and glass jars.
  • Tin and steel cans antifreeze in fifteen gallons or fewer containers.
  • Rechargeable batteries and car batteries.
  • Electronics items including small appliances, computers, monitors, game counsels, and other items.
  • Fluorescent lamps.
  • Motor oil and oil filters (motor oil must be in fifteen-gallon containers or less).
  • Used paint.
  • Sharps (needles).
  • Styrofoam.

Other non-recyclables are also processed at most transfer stations for free, such as;

  • Appliances (including those with Freon) and units with heat pumps are processed for fifteen dollars and seventy-five cents.
  • Concrete can be deposited in chunks the size of grocery carts or smaller for about eighty-four dollars at Glenwood or forty-one dollars at the Rural Transfer Station.
  • Bulky mattresses and box springs can be taken to the Glenwood Transfer Station and processed for about twelve dollars per mattress (note: mattresses must be clean and dry and the site will only accept ten or fewer units).
  • Propane tanks or five gallons or less are accepted for just four dollars and fifty cents.
  • Up to ten tires for passenger cars or light trucks with rims of twenty-four inches or less may be deposited for between three and twenty dollars per tire.
  • Wood waste and yard debris include lumber, pallets, most wood products, but no pressed paper or mixed materials or railroad ties. Fees cost about seventy-five dollars per ton.
