What do you do with your expired or unneeded prescription drugs? Did you know that prescription drugs cannot go into your trash orange or your dumpster bin? In addition, they are not to be put in your toilet or down the drain. The reason for that is that these chemicals have proven to be very harmful to human health and can also harm fish and aquatic life.

Disposal of syringes, needles, and lancets, or what are more commonly referred to as sharps, is also highly regulated. There is a good reason for this. Shrubs can carry hepatitis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and other germs that cause disease. Placing these items in the trash or flushing them down the toilet can place public health at risk and even in danger to sanitation workers or utility workers.

LightRecycle Washington

LightRecycle Washington is a program that allows individuals and businesses in Washington to recycle up to 10 mercury-containing lights per day for free. You can recycle straight and curved fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and high-intensity discharge lights (HIDs) at authorized LightRecycle collection sites.

In Jefferson County, you can drop off your lights at the:

• Recycling Center at the Transfer Station on South Jacob Miller Road. The Center is open every day except for Sunday from nine in the morning until four-thirty in the afternoon.
• The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility it’s also a useful facility to dispose of certain items. The facility is located at 282 10th Street in the Boat Haven and is open every Friday from ten in the morning until noon and then from twelve-thirty until four-thirty in the afternoon. You may also access the facility on the first Saturday of every month during the same hours.

Wheat Ridge “Roots”

Those of us that love Wheat Ridge take pride in the city’s deep roots, rich history, and a strong sense of community that makes our home a unique place to live. These roots extend back to the Gold Rush in the mid-Nineteenth Century, where Wheat Ridge was an oasis and rest stop for miners traveling to mountain gold camps. As travelers passed along the Overland Trail, there were amazed by golden ridges of wheat. Perhaps the true gold was in farming and storage communities, which were built in part by unsuccessful minors that returned to the fertile soil of the golden ridges and the community of Wheat Ridge began to grow.
