Avon Park, Waste, Environment and a City Founded on Wildlife

Avon Park is a city with over ten thousand inhabitants in Central Florida’s Highland County.  While many Floridians and visitors are taken by the tropical wildlife and natural environment, Avon Park was founded on this ecological interest.  In 1884, the city’s founder, Oliver Martin Crosby, came the area to study wildlife, particularly that of the biologically rich Everglades.  Other settlers also came, including some from Stratford-upon-Avon, from which the town derived its name.

Avon is the home of some interesting attractions, such as the SFSC Museum of Florida Art & Culture, the Avon Park Historical Depot, and the Alan Jay Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts.  Avon also offers the over forty-acre Lake Verona for boaters and wildlife enthusiasts.  Another unique local attraction is the Maxwell Groves shop, which was established in 1935 by Big Daddy and Gramma Leoma as a local market for citrus and fruits. Today, the shop has rocking chairs on the front porch where customers enjoy local honey, dairy-free ice cream, and jams and jellies.

A Continuing Wildlife Tradition

Avon Park Air Force Range (AFR) bombing and gunnery range is located near the center of the state of Florida and provides a training complex for joint, interagency, and multinational partners with a focus in air-ground integration.  The AFR lands expand over one hundred thousand acres and include some of Florida’s northern Everglades and agricultural communities.  Over eighty thousands of these acres encompass over twenty-two miles of hiking and nature trails, camping grounds, four stocked ponds to enjoy fishing, and a birdwatcher’ss paradise that hosts Florida Scrub Jays, Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, Florida Grasshopper Sparrows, Wood Storks, Roseate Spoonbills, Burrowing Owls, and Crested Caracaras.

Environmental oversight is handled by The Fish, Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation program which, in cooperation with other programs, does the following:

  • Studies and monitors the wildlife through species surveys.
  • Enforces bag limits that restrict the number of fish or animals that can be hunted, the size of animals hunted, and sometimes the seasons in which hunting certain animals are allowed.
  • Engages in controlled burns (prescribed and rotational) to minimize threats of fires.
  • Handles cattle grazing land leases.
Highlands County Landfill

Non-recyclable waste is taken to the Highlands County’s landfill located at 12700 Arbuckle Creek Road in Sebring and disposes of about one hundred thousand tons of refuse each year.  The facility encompasses almost one thousand acres that are surrounded by a buffer of trees and contains:

  • A leachate collection and treatment system.
  • A methane gas collection system that burns gases to reduce air pollution.
  • A Construction and Demolition (C&D) cell.
  • Areas for yard waste, tires, metal and other items that are recycled or reused on the site.

The Process of Renting an Open-top Container

Are you considering an open-top container?  Easy Dumpster Rental offers a range of containers from ten to forty cubic yards to help with any project, and we rent these containers at the lowest prices available.  To get started, just follow the following steps:

  • First, get a speedy quote online or in person by calling.  We will match the container to your needs and the best prices.
  • Second, tell us when you want your open top container.  We generally deliver within forty-eight hours but can get you your container in twenty-four hours if you are in a hurry.
  • Third, fill your open-top container with your waste.  Containers are generally rented for a period of fourteen days, but if you need more time, we can arrange this with you.  If your container fills up, no problem, we can dump your waste and return the container to your site and keep your job going.
  • Fourth, just tell us when you want to have you dumpster picked-up by calling us on the phone or by requesting an online pickup, and we will take your container and waste away.
It’s that easy!
