Baldwin’s over Century-long History

The Town of Baldwin is named after Dr. Abel Seymour Baldwin, who was the president of the Florida Atlantic and Gulf Central Railroad, which benefited many settlements in the interior of Duval County that lacked access to the trade via the Atlantic and Gulf coasts or rivers that supplied access to Steamboat-based commerce.  Although the first stagecoach came to the area that is today’s Baldwin in 1835, the Town was not incorporated until 1913.

Preventing Food Waste

As noted by the Duval County government, more than ten percent of municipal waste (household trash) is comprised of food waste. At the same time, some people suffer from hunger. This dilemma has inspired some to act on behalf of food conservation and assistance to the hungry. The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Florida, a part of the Lutheran Social Services of Jacksonville (LSS), is collecting excess food and redistributing it to the needy, and in one year was able to take in six million pounds of donated food. Grocery stores, for example, donated a variety of perishables and food drives generated further resources. At the same time, the ‘Kids Café’ is currently providing over one thousand children snacks and meals after school.

How to Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste

If you are working on a home project with a rollaway dumpster, it is important to remember not to throw away hazardous waste. It is easy to find such items, especially when cleaning a shed, home, or attic or if you are moving homes and rent a dumpster to get rid of extra stuff. These items can come in the form of chemicals, such as painter, pesticides, or pool chemicals. Appliances, large and small, are also hazardous to the environment, as are many batteries, mercury container devises, explosives, and cleaning chemicals and pesticides. To get rid of these items in Baldwin, there are two options:

Methods of Minimizing Construction and Demolition Waste

If you are engaged in a renovation, a demolition, or a large or small construction project in Baldwin, you will likely produce a sizable amount of waste. Construction waste adds up quickly. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that over five hundred and forty-eight million tons of construction and demolition waste was produced in the United States from projects of all types in 2015. To give some relative perspective on that amount, it was about twice total regular waste (municipal waste) produced by homes and businesses. There are a number of ways that the U.S. government suggests to temper the demand of construction waste by:

  • Reducing construction and demolition waste. One method of reducing construction waste is to use preexisting structures instead of leveling sites and building new structures. In some cases, this practice can preserve classical architecture that can be valuable to communities. Other materials can e disassembled and reused.
  • Savaging materials left from construction and demolition projects by preserving all materials possible before projects can the environment and save money in many cases.
  • Increase the amount of recycling of construction debris. Asphalt, concrete, and rubble can often be recycled and, in some cases, this can be done on site and used again. Wood and cardboard can be refashioned into new produces, and metals, including steel, copper, and brass, should also be repurposed and can bring in a revenue.

Reuse construction materials, when possible, to remove them from the waste disposal chain. Some items include doors, hardware, and fixtures. Wood pieces can also be repurpose on site a ground cover, and some contractors grind brick, concrete and masonry into a driveway bedding. Insulation and packaging materials can be recycled.

It’s that easy!
