Islamorada is a village in Monroe County in Florida.  Islamorada has a pristine location on five islands in the Florida Keys that include Tea Table Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Windley Key and Plantation Key.  Spanish explorers originally named the village Islamorada to mean “Island Purple.”  The Village was initiated in 1907 by William Krome who platted the area that became Islamorada and the Islamorada Post Office was founded in 1908.  Following a vote by residents, the area of Islamorada was incorporated in 1998.

The Village of Islamorada is keen to create a more environmentally responsible planet and has a number of environmentally driven policies with the following goals:

• Reducing global warming pollution levels.
• Improving the economic quality of life for residents and reduce energy bills.
• Preserving the Village’s green space.
• Increasing energy conservation.

The Village has numerous environmental initiatives and programs in progress including:

• The Got Your Bags Florida Keys Program: One way that the Village government promotes environmentalism is by promoting certain habits in the employees and citizens by using plastic bags under the Got Your Bags Florida Keys Initiative.
• Conservation Properties: The Village has also acquired a number of properties for green development through the Florida Communities Trust Property Acquisition Grant and additional properties have been donated or purchased on behalf of the Village by the Monroe County Land Authority.  The Village manages over 170 acres of park and conservation property.
• Wastewater Collection: The City of Islamorada continually works to improve its wastewater collection system, which in years past has dumped water into the sea. In 2015, the Village engaged in a $160 million wastewater project to advance the sanitary sewer service in its incorporated islands of Plantation Key, Windley Key, and Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys to process wastewater through the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment Facility.
