North Bay Village: A Land From the Sea

North Bay Village resides in Miami-Dade County of Florida.  The area is located on the prime real estate between Miami and Miami Beach and is referred to as a three-island community.  If you came to North Bay Village in 1940, you would find yourself under the waters of the Biscayne Bay.  But dredging projects that ensued gradually sculpted new land of great value in today’s real estate market, with a population that is just over eight thousand, a median income of over fifty thousand dollars a year, and an average home price that is upwards of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.  North Bay Village is full of swank, with a bustling nightlife that attracted Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra years ago and was the location of Dean Martin’s club.  North Bay Village also offer daytime attractions such as the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, the Old Fort Lauderdale Village & Museum, the Museum of Discovery and Science, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, the Young at Art Children’s Museum, and even the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame and Museum.

A Green Approach to Solid Waste

North Bay Village adheres to guidelines that limit the environmental impact of the trash collection process.  One such guideline is that resident’s place trash on the edge of their property and not on the street or sidewalk.  Trash that is left in the right-of-ways can often be blown away by high winds or washed into the stormwater drainage system with heavy rains and, thereby, block drainage systems and pollute the waters.  In addition, the Village considers it a violation to place yard trash, such as leaves, grass clippings, vines, and other small clippings (with the exception of brush) for curbside pickup without being properly bundled in plastic bags or containers.  Additionally, the City stipulates that large items that fall under the category of “brush” must be cute to a maximum of three feet with a diameter of four inches or less.  If branches or stumps exceed the four-inch diameter, they must be cut into pieces of no more than two feet in any direction.  Additionally, city regulations hold that brush piles should comply with a maximum volume of three feet by four feet by five feet; large piles will incur fees for the resident.
