In the year 2000, the town of Southwest Ranches incorporated as Broward County’s thirtieth municipality, which is located just fifteen miles southwest (as the name implies) of Fort Lauderdale and runs up against the exotic Everglades to the south.  The decision to for the town was made largely to preserve and protect the rural lifestyle of the community, which was named after its many horse ranches and geographical location in the southeastern portion of the county.  The town of Southwest Ranches has about seven thousand residents that enjoy picturesque scenes of grazing animals, nurseries, exotic wildlife, and unusual scenery.  The city strives to curb the tide of ever-increasing development in Florida and instead preserve its rural lifestyle, and even opposes building sidewalks in certain places.

Preserving Southwest Ranches Natural Habitat

Southwest Ranches’ Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Department manages and protects the communities recreational areas, forests and urban forest, wildlife, natural resources, and public lands.  There are several programs that to protect the environment and lands of Southwest Ranches:

• The Community Wildlife and Habitat Program is designed to promote awareness of the indigenous wildlife and means of protecting it through a website and other outreach facilitated by the Community Wildlife Habitat team.
• The Urban Forestry Management and Maintenance Program strives to improve the Town’s air and water quality while promoting Southwest Ranches’ placement of hundreds of trees in its public places that comprise its Urban Forest.
• The Department staff also works with the Recreation, Forestry, and Natural Resources Advisory Board.  This body is designed to communicate with residents and represent their interests to the Town Council.

Southwest Ranches Environmental Parks

In the year 2000, the Town of Southwest Ranches acquired around one hundred and fifty acres for parks with walking trails, horse riding trails, fishing areas, and other amenities, such as play areas and restrooms.  These natural parks for residents and visitors include:

• Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park: The first park in Town to be developed was the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park for horse lovers.  The park is ten acres in size and offers an equestrian practice ring with seating for judges and spectators and an equestrian oasis to water horses.
• Trailside Park: Trailside Park was designed to create and preserve a natural that borders and balances commercial development on the East side of Town.
• Southwest Meadows Sanctuary: The Southwest Meadows Sanctuary offers over twenty-six acres of Southwest Ranches recreational spaces and is considered by the Town government to be a jewel of future development for equestrian trails, wetlands, playfields, and other amenities.
• Southwest Meadows Sanctuary, or Calusa Corners, offers an eleven-acre green space for the public.
• Rolling Oaks Passive Park Truly is a forty-six-acre green area with a fitness trail and community facility.
• Country Estates Fishing Hole: This site was purchased from a former nursery to eventually offer freshwater fishing.
• Frontier Trails: Frontier Trails is a thirty-acre green area purchased from a neighboring city and is designed as a wetland with grants from the Florida Communities Trust and from Broward County’s Open Space.

Southwest Ranches Solid Waste, Bulk Waste, and Recycling

The City of Southwest Ranches oversees the collection of Solid waste (trash), bulk waste, and recycling.  The Town twice per week collects solid waste.  Trash cans must weigh fifty pounds or less and forty gallons or less in volume.  Loose items will not be collected.  Additionally, as Southwest Ranches has a long and rich equestrian tradition, it should also be noted that horse maneuver will not be collected.
Buk waste is collected twice per week and must be placed separately from garbage.  Examples of acceptable bulk items include:

• Large appliances (residents should remove doors from refrigerators).
• White goods and appliances.
• Furniture, such as couches, chairs, mattresses, and tables.
• Other items, such a lumber, carpets, and padding.

Recycling is also pick-up two days each week.  Acceptable items for recycling include:

• Cardboard and paper, including clean paper, milk cartons, cardboard (broken down), cereal boxes, mail, egg cartons, newspapers, magazines, phone books, and junk mail.
• Plastic bottles and jugs (including dairy) without caps and lids.
• Aluminum, steel, and tin cans.
• Glass bottles and jugs.

Items that are not acceptable for recycling include:

• Pizza boxes.
• Dishes or paper plates.
• Clothing, textiles, or carpet.
• Juice boxes and pouches.
• Aerosol cans.
• Hoses.
• Plastic bags.
• Tires,
• Styrofoam.
• Batteries.
• Electronics.
• Toys.
• Plants.
