Tavares Environmental Protection and Solid Waste

Tavares is a city located in the central portion of the in Lake County in Central Florida with over fourteen thousand residents in 2015.  The original town was founded by Alexander St. Clair-Abrams, a newspaper and railroad owner, in 1880.  The City has an Environmental Services Division addresses concerns such as mosquito control, the development of aquatic plants, stormwater management, and the regulation of fertilizer usage.  The solid waste division is responsible for garbage collection, recycling, bulk trash collection, and yard waste.

Garbage Collection

Garbage is collected from blue bins approved by the City and collected curbside. Tree limbs and foliage are also collected curbside weekly. The City also collects bulk items, such as large furniture items, appliances, and large metal items four times per year free of charge.

Recycling in Tavares

The City of Tavares has a RecycleBank program to offer discounts and special deals from more than three thousand local and national businesses through which members can earn as much as one hundred and sixty-five dollars.  Items approved for recycling include:

• Paper products (e.g. office paper, newsprint, magazines, envelopes, phone books, unwanted mail, and paper bags) that are not glossy or coated and is free of binding or wires.
• Corrugated and boxboard cardboard products free of packing items, packaging materials, strapping, shrink wrap, and wax coatings (e.g. moving boxes, cereal or cake boxes).
• Mixed (or comingled) containers include rinsed glass and aluminum beverage containers, steel and tin cans, food grade plastic containers and lids, plastic containers for soaps such as dish, car, laundry, soaps.

The City does NOT accept the following items for recycling:

• While comingled containers for normal household food grade items are acceptable for recycling, non-food grade items are not accepted. Unacceptable glass includes glass windows and unacceptable plastics includes items such as siding, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), Pyrex and Tupperware items, plant pots, foam, plastic bags, and industrial plastics.
• Items with any food residue (e.g. used pizza boxes) are considered unacceptable and must be emptied and cleaned before recycling.
• Containers that previously contained hazardous materials such as cleaners, oil, fuel, herbicides, or pesticides are unacceptable and should instead be disposed of through the Lake County Solid Waste Division’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

Hazardous waste should not be recycled and instead disposed of through the Household Hazardous Waste Center (located at 13130 County Landfill Road, County Road 561) or through the Lake County Solid Waste’s Mobile Unit Outreach Program, which offers events in which residents can dispose of hazardous waste more conveniently.  The following items can be disposed of at the Center or the Mobil Unit:

• Chemicals, oil, oil cans, paint cans, spray paint, and Aerosol cans
• Lawn mowers, tires, auto parts, and car batteries.
• Plate glass, mirrors, and light bulbs.
• Styrofoam, cardboard, and wood.
