Recycle Facts and Other Quick info on the Northbrook (or Shermerville)

Northbrook is a suburb of the city of Chicago that has become a vibrant community. At the turn of the Twentieth Century, Northbrook was incorporated with the namesake of Frederic Schermer for his donation of land for the first train station but later changed its name to Northbrook about twenty years later. Northbrook is now one of the Chicago suburbs in what is referred to as the North Shore area.

Keeping Northbrook Green

As Chicago has grown so has the surrounding suburbs, which as rendered the one new location of a train station a Village of over thirty-three thousand people in a total area of just more than thirteen square miles. While expansion and development were once the driving forces of this town, today the Village and its residents are also concerned with conservation. One area of conservation that maintains the value and ambiance of this pristine area are the many trees. This has resulted in a large-scale effort to maintain wanted trees and remove those that are invasive. Some of these efforts include the following measures and regulations:

  1. To remove a tree that is six inches in diameter or more is more than four and one-half feet tall, or has multiple trunks, a tree removal permit is required from the Village. Other trees require approval by the Village because they are considered heritage trees (e.g. American Elms of thirty-six inches or more, Oak trees of thirty inches or more, Hickory of sixteen inches or more, and Ironwood of ten inches or more).
  2. Other trees are considered to be “Landmark Trees” and are also protected in many cases. Certain Hickory trees of one-half foot diameter may require approval, as may Ironwood form six to ten inches in diameter and oak form eight to thirty inches in diameter. Additionally, other trees (e.g. Sugar Maples, Norway Maples, Schwelder and Crimson King Sugar Maples, Red Maples, White Pine Trees, Bald Cypress trees, Spruce, Basswood or American Linden, Black Walnut, Buckeye, the unique Kentucky Coffeetree, Dawn Redwoods, ad male Gingkos) of one-foot diameters or more.
  3. The Village does more than restrict residents from being cut but also works to help residents maintain trees and services trees in public areas through its tree forestry services. These services include a) trimming trees that have become overgrown, removing harmful pests that may hurt trees in public areas, treatment of any sick trees, tree removal in unfortunate cases in which trees must be taken down, and the rewarding act of planting new trees.
