Orland Park and Sedgewick Station

Henry Taylor originally settled Orland Park in 1834 with Ichabod and William Myrick.  The early settlers built log cabins for their families to get through the intense winters that the Chicago area is known for, and the Orland Historical Society has reconstructed the original structures.  In the second half of the Nineteenth Century, the railroad and the local Sedgewick Station made Orland a prosperous agrarian community.

Green Program in Orland Park

Increasingly, local towns and villages have incorporated programs to improve and protect eh The Village of Orland Park has a number of programs to protect its environment.  These programs are designed to promote improved conservation in residents, neighborhoods, business, and the wider community.

  • “Adopt a Park or Path” is a program that the Village offers to that can be used by individuals or businesses or other groups. When an individual of the group decides to adopt a path or park, they commit to simply clean up the debris.  The Adopt a Path or Park is a great way to get kids and community members involved in the maintenance of a clean and pristine city.
  • “Smart Living at Home” is a program by the Village to give people the information and tips on how to live greener at home. Some of these tips include things like how to dispose of batteries and how to recycle other items.  Other elements include how to reduce energy consumption and get rebates for energy efficiency improvements.  Another interesting tip is the use of rain barrels.  Rain barrels are placed to capture the water that runs off the roof so that these resources can be reused.  The process saves water and also reduced the amount of water that goes through the water system.
  • “Smart Businesses” is a program that expands the residential program, “Smart Living at Home,” to the commercial level.  Through this program, the Village promotes energy efficient materials and CF and LED lights.  Rebates are also offered for initiatives that reduce energy consumption, such as a more advanced refrigeration or data center.  The program also seeks to incentivize energy efficient systems in new commercial buildings.
  • The “Smart Neighborhood” agenda is focussed on the development of full neighborhoods with increased energy efficiency goals.  At this level, the Village works with recognition of green neighborhoods through the National Association of Home Builders’North American Home Builder’s National Green Building Standard.
  • The “Smart Village” is a program to include the Village of Orland Park in the green movements. The Village has successfully maintained a LEED Gold Certified Police Headquarters and used new technologies in its government buildings.  The program has also reduced paper usage by increasing recycling and electronic paperwork, installed improved HVAC systems and new boilers and lighting systems to save energy.

Supporting Good Private Sector Environmental Management

The support of green programs does not stop at the local level.  There are a number of State and Federal programs that also offer information and guidelines that can help businesses and residential homeowners reduce energy usage that saves money and reduces damage to the environment.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for example, offers a number recognizes commercial construction projects that erect building or plants that are designed to reduce energy usage under the Energy Star Program.  Energy Star also offers its seal of approval for energy conservation and costs savings. More importantly, if you are looking for methods to reduce energy usage, the EPA Energy Star program identified commercial items, such as flat-screen televisions or HVAC units that are the most energy efficient.  These tips can help private homeowners, businesses, and even governments to get the most efficient products.
