Superfund Landfill Going Solar
According to an article in Waste360.com, a Superfund site in Spartanburg, SC will be delivering energy to its residents through solar power. A Superfund or The Comprehensive, Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) is a law that helps clean up a site that is contaminated with toxic and hazardous waste. In cooperation with a Vermont solar photovoltaic company, groSolar, has teamed up with Duke Energy and others to deliver renewable energy to the residents of Spartanburg.
The resulting energy will help power up to 500 homes on the former Arkwright Landfill site. The energy that will be produced will remove about 4,000 tons of CO2 gases from the environment and will create about 50 jobs. The landfill was opened in 1958 and became overfilled, hazardous, and abandoned in 1973.
In 2014, at a cleanup cost of $9.5 million the cleanup and capping were finally completed.
