Another great example of how Mission keeps its city focused on the mission of a green environment is this annual volunteer cleanup project for Earth Day each year. This past year, almost one hundred and fifty volunteers volunteered in April to pick up trash in areas across the City. The Earth Day event started in Beverly Park with music and breakfast and then groups fanned across the city and gradually picked up litter from parks, trails, and roadways to make Mission just a little bit cleaner.

Most importantly, household hazardous waste is banned from your trash bins and your dumpster container. Household hazardous waste includes materials that are dangerous to public health, the environment, and even sanitation workers. Because of this, you must take your household hazardous waste to a special facility for processing.

To get rid of household hazardous waste try the household hazardous waste facility at the Johnson County Landfill at 17955 Holiday Drive in Shawnee. The Johnson County Landfill is open on weekdays from seven in the morning until five in the evening and on Saturday from seven in the morning until three in the afternoon (note: the facility is closed on Sundays) and has a household hazardous waste facility in which residents can safely dispose of their old or unwanted household hazardous waste. These things can include things like:

• Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes (Pack separate from other items to avoid breaking).
• Lawn, garden chemicals, solvents, paint thinner, acetone, kerosene, and wood preservatives.
• Tires (note: there is a limit of just four per month per household).
• Propane cylinders.
