The Significance Of Recycling

With the lack of public support to build new landfills and the cumbersome process of getting permits, it has never been so important to recycle. It can take years to get through the permitting process and millions of dollars to build a new landfill. Plus, there isn’t a strong appetite to put landfills in most communities. So to help alleviate the need for dumps, we must take recycling more seriously. According to most major studies, over 75% of all solid waste taken to landfills are materials that can be recycled.

One of the biggest problems we are facing is the proliferation of plastics. Our seas, rivers, and lakes are literally choked to death because of plastics. The Plastic Oceans Foundation estimates there are over 5 trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans. Plastics can take up to 400 hundred years to break down, whereas newspapers take about six weeks and newspapers take about two weeks.

And once the plastic is in our ecosystems, it most likely will be there for a very long time. Over 90% of all seabirds have plastic in their stomachs. The Foundation has seven tips we can do to help reduce plastics in our environment:

  • Stop using plastic straws. In The U.S. and UK, over 500 million straws are thrown away every day.
  • Worldwide over 500 billion plastic bottles are used every year. Start using reusable bottles.
  • Over 1 trillion plastic bags are discarded worldwide every year. Use a tote bag instead.
  • Use cloth diapers instead of disposables. In the U.S., over 27 million disposables are thrown away every year.
  • Get rid of the disposable razor. In the U.S., over 2 billion are thrown away every year.
  • Try to give up gum. It is made of synthetic rubber, which is plastic, and over 100,000 tons are discarded worldwide on a yearly basis.
  • Get the plastic off your face. There are over 300,000 plastic beads in a tube of face wash.

These statistics are alarming. And we must do our part to stop plastics from destroying our environment. It takes 6 liters of water to make a one-liter plastic bottle. Fish in the North Pacific ingest 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic each year. Do your best to try to implement the above tips into your lifestyle. If we don’t act now, we are going to have a major crisis facing not only our bodies of water but human and marine life as well.
