How to Recycle in Omaha?

Omaha has changed its recycling to a single-stream system. Single-stream systems are considered more efficient because all recyclables can be placed in one container and then separated after the collection through a complex process that separates the materials.

If you are renting a roll-off bin dumpster from Easy Dumpster Rental, you may want to separate your recycling from your regular waste.  This technique can save space for regular waste, help the environment, and be disposed of for free.  But if you have excess waste, where can you go to self-haul your recycling?  The City offers a number of locations:

  • Far West Central Drop-off Site is located at 1000 S 178th Street in HyVee (Glass Only).
  • The Northwest Drop-off Site is located at 14949 Evans Plaza, which is on 150th and Maple Streets near the West Grayhawk Shopping Center in Fresh Thyme (Glass Only).
  • West Central Drop-off Site is located at Westwood Plaza at 12075 West Center Road (Glass Only).
  • The Downtown Drop-off Site is located at 800 Douglas Street in Heartland Park near Riverfront Drive (glass only).
  • West Drop-off Site is located at 20801 Elkhorn Drive at the parking lot.
  • Northwest Drop-off Site The drop-off Site is located in the parking lot at the intersection of North 75th Street and Corby Street.

Nebraska’s Extension Program

Those of us living in Nebraska want to preserve the natural environment that we love in the most effective manner possible. One method to optimize environmental protection is to adjoin academic research on environmental protection with local government policies and information dissemination.  This is accomplished through cooperation with Nebraska Counties, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Divisions of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources through the Cooperative Extension. Omaha’s division of the extension is the Douglas/Sarpy Cooperative Extension Service.

Environmental Lawn Care

The Douglas/Sarpy Cooperative Extension Service offers research and guidelines for residents of Omaha to take care of their waste.  The Cooperative Extension offers a brochure on how to care for lawns in an environmental manner.  This offers items like developing a mowing plan that can help develop a consistent schedule to mow lawns so that clippings are filtered back into the lawn visually pleasingly and suggests (for most lawns) a 2.5 to 3-inch lawn mower blade height.

In addition, the NebGuide helps residents and businesses deal with thatch. Thatch is an unpleasant condition that you may have experienced on your lawn. Layers of dead or decaying tissues develop between the green turf and the soil. As this unhealthy layer develops, the grass begins to grow into the thatch instead of the soil, weakening the grass turf. The NebGuid helps residents test for and treat thatch in their lawns.

It’s that easy!
