The Diverse And Distinctive Landfills In America

Landfills are under the auspices of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Landfills are mandated to meet strict design, operation, and closure requirements set forth by the RCRA. As of 2018, the United States has about 3,000 active landfills, which is roughly one each county in America. Landfills are primarily used for the disposal of solid waste.
The regulation of landfills falls under RCRA Subtitle D, which manages solid waste and Subtitle C, which handles hazardous or toxic wastes. Subtitle D relies on local and state governments for the planning and regulation of solid waste. This type of waste is your typical household garbage and industrial waste that is nonhazardous. These types of landfills include:

  • Municipal Solid Waste Landfills which dispose of household solid waste.
  • Bioreactor Landfills are built to transform and degrade organic waste.
  • Industrial Waste Landfills are designed to handle commercial solid waste.
  • Construction and Demolition Debris Landfill collects debris from construction sites. Including concrete.
  • Coal Combustion Residual Landfills which dispose of coal combustion.

Subtitle C Landfills as mentioned earlier dispose of hazardous waste. The main concern with hazardous waste is that it is handled in a safe a manner where no harm can come to human health or the ecosystems. Besides hazardous waste landfills, there is also Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Landfills which also fall under this category.
PCBs are man-made organic materials which were used for electrical insulation and electrical appliances. They were also sprayed on dirt roads to keep the dust down. The Government banned the use of this material in 1979.
Landfills also track Leachate, which is generated from liquids that are already present in the waste and passes through the waste. Leachate can cause pollution to runoff into our aquifers. Landfills must have leachate collection systems which consist of 4 parts.

  • Collection layer
  • Geotextile filter
  • Pipe system which is surrounded by a bed of gravel where the leachate is funneled to a sump.
  • The pump which removes the leachate from the landfill, where it is taken to facilities to manage it.

The landfills are also regulated to monitor the groundwater. This is to ensure that there is no contamination of underground water supplies. This system consists of 3 phases. Detection, Assessment, and Corrective measures.
Then after a landfill has served out its usefulness, the landfill is closely watched for 30 years. It is good to know that the EPA is closely monitoring these landfills and protecting us and the environment from potential hazardous complications that could have devastating and lasting results.
And don’t forget, when you need a waste removal company to haul household and construction waste to your local landfill or to assist in your recycling efforts, Easy Dumpster Rental can help you get your trash to the dump. We offer top service and low price guarantee and 16 years of experience.
It’s that easy!
