Recycling Best Practices

The majority of Americans hearts in the right place when it comes to recycling. However, there seems to be more talk than action. Landfill operators all over the country lament the fact that there is, relatively speaking, a long way to go for the country to realize large-scale recycling efforts by our citizens. Operators report that over 70% of the solid waste they receive could actually be recycled. This is astonishing. I can remember in my hometown recycling bins being made available back in the 1970’s. For decades the government has pleaded with people to recycle more and most cities have made it relatively easy to accomplish. One of the initiatives that springs to mind is single-stream recycling. To help encourage us to recycle more and to make it easier, we now can mix most recyclables into the same bin and the separation is completed at the recycling facility. But, we are all still falling short of a concerted effort to recycle.  So, what are some of the benefits of recycling? There are many and the list is too long to mention but here are a few.

  • Most important is that we can lessen our dependence on landfills and eventually phase them out.
  • Natural resources can be conserved including water, minerals, and forests. Our trees are disappearing at an alarming rate.
  • If we can reduce the number of raw materials we use, it will lessen pollution.
  • Hundreds of thousands of jobs are created each year in the recycling industry.
  • Tens of billions of dollars are added to our economy has a result of recycling practices.

The downside of not recycling is having an adverse effect on our country including:

  • Depletion of natural resources
  • Landfills that are bursting at the seams. And the will to build news sites.
  • More pollution.
  • Higher energy costs

What can we do? Plenty. Make it a priority to recycle more. Separate your recyclables from your solid waste. Its easy and you will be contributing to the well being of your city and country. This is not rocket science. If you have any questions contact Garfield Heights City Hall, they will be happy to help. Read papers and if you are really ambitious, take a look at some research studies. Education is the start of solving problems before they become so overwhelming that we get to the point of no return. So, jump in feet first and help save our country from being overrun by litter.
