As early as 1747 the Brits had a fort in the area. Originally, Piqua was 2 distinct cities but merged in 1800. The city was nicknamed “Atomic City” because it was home to the first municipal nuclear power plant, the Piqua Nuclear Generating Station. The village is home to the Hartzell Propeller Company who is the leading maker of small aircraft propellers in the world. The 2 largest employers are Industry Products Company and Piqua City Schools. Solid Waste Information
The department is in charge of the collection of solid waste materials which includes yard waste, bulk items, and recycling services. The village does provide weekly pickups for all the aforementioned services. Piqua loves their sanitation department employees so much they even have a “National Garbage Man Day” to celebrate these unsung heroes. The Public Works Department operates the compost facility. You do need to purchase a voucher to use the site over on S. Main St.
On your regular scheduled collection day, the city will pick up your bulk items. Furniture, tires, and water heaters are a few of the items the city will collect. If you have larger scrap such as swing sets, it is requested that you break them down into more manageable pieces.
The Sanitation Department will absolutely not pick up concrete, bricks, and trees or stumps.
If you are over sixty-five, or disabled, the town has a program where they will provide assistance to help you get your trash to the curb, especially during the winter months. All you have to do is fill out a form and wait for approval.
