What About Items That are Difficult to Recycle? (Modify)

For most things that we recycle we are well aware of how to do it. Aluminum cans, milk containers, and plastics are all easy to process. But what about items that are not so familiar or may even be hazardous? These items either require or can benefit from spacial processing. This can often happen if you find paint in your basements, fluid in your garage, or electronic goods. As follows is a guide to some of the items that may pop up and are considered difficult to process:

  • Paint and Paint Products: Water-based/latex paint, oil-based paint, paint thinner, rust remover, turpentine, and furniture stripper can be processed at any Charleston County recycling center.
  • Automotive Fluids: Automotive fluids, such as antifreeze, gasoline, and used motor oil (as well as filters and bottles, may be taken to any one of Charleston County recycling centers and not placed in your recycling bin. In addition, old gasoline is accepted at the Bees Ferry Convenience Center (note: no mixed gas or oil), and other retailers such as Advance Auto Parts, Auto Zone, NAPA Auto Parts, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Pep Boys, Walmart, and Jiffy Lube.
  • Car Batteries: It is required by law in South Carolina that all lead-acid batteries are recycled, which are accepted by all counties in the state. In Charleston County, you may take your car batteries to any Charleston County recycling location or any auto parts retailers that accept batteries and you can often recycle your old lead-acid battery at the retail location where you bought your new one.
  • Scrap Metal and Large Appliances: Large appliances are often referred to as e-waste, and must be recycled in the state of  South Carolina. The City of Charleston accepts these items at all Charleston County recycling locations. Additionally, many retailers will also offer to recycle your e-waste when you buy a new unit, and, if not, you can always take your e-waste to Charleston Steel and Metal for recycling.
  • Electronics: because electronics are so commonly upgraded and fill up landfills so quickly, most states prohibit electronics from your trash bin or your dumpster container. As a result, you are required by law to recycle computers, computer monitors, printers, and televisions, which can be done at any Charleston County recycling center or through any retailer that participates in electronic waste recycling.
  • Tires: South Carolina requires by law that tires are recycled, which can be done at any Charleston County to a Charleston County recycling or through any local retailer that will accept the old tires for recycling.

In addition, Charleston County recycling locations can be found as follows:

  • The Signal Point Recycling Center, at 1723 Signal Point Road in James Island.
  • The Bees Ferry Landfill Recycling Center, at 1344 Bees Ferry Road in Charleston.
  • The Awendaw Recycling Center, at 6380 Maxville Road in Awendaw.
