The Davis Landfill
The Davis Landfill is a historic landfill that began receiving waste in about 1952 and was permanently closed just before the turn of the century. The first phase of the new (lined) landfill cell was constructed in 1998 in accordance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to include an engineered bottom liner and leachate collection system. The landfill also runs a gas-to-energy project completed in 2004 and four years later an additional generator was added, giving it an increased capacity by almost double the megawatts of renewable electricity that is capable of powering about fifteen thousand homes. The facility also has a flexible membrane that encases currently inactive areas of the lined landfill to improve landfill gas capture and control odor.
If you would like to visit the facility with your waste, there is a residential drop-off facility at the landfill where self-haul customers may drop off waste without having to enter the landfill cell. Waste is dropped on a large concrete pad after which it is taken away by sanitation workers for processing. The facility also offers a drop-off facility if you have a large amount of recycling.
