What Do I Do With Household Hazardous Waste?

When you get a new dumpster bin, it can feel like anything can go in your bin. And most things can. But some things are prohibited from your dumpster bin and your trash bin. One of these things is hazardous waste. Hazardous waste must be disposed of properly by professionals. If flushed down a toilet or put in the trash of a dumpster bin, these items can harm the environment, negatively impact public health, and even place sanitation workers at risk.

But what are these items? Some of them include:

  • Fuels are used for vehicles or other mechanisms and automotive fluids and products.
  • Pesticides, yard care chemicals, and many chemicals in cleaning supplies.
  • Fluorescent light bulbs and devices that contain mercury.
  • Televisions, computers, monitors, and peripherals.

You will always find these items if you are remodeling your garage, kitchen, basement, or bathroom. You may also find electronic waste if you are rebuilding your office or your business facility.

The next question our clients ask is: If I find household hazardous waste, where do I take these items. Fortunately, Easy Dumpster Rental is here to help. There are several locations you can take your hazardous waste to:

  • Many residents take their waste to the Salt Lake Valley Health Department at 4646 South 500 West in Murray, which is open for deposits on weekdays from seven in the morning until three in the afternoon.
  • If you have Fluorescent light bulbs, they may also be taken to the Alt Lake County Library which can be accessed in Holiday, Whitmore, Tyler, or Taylorsville.
  • Other types of household hazardous waste can be taken to the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Facility at 6030 West California Avenue (1400 South) from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon.
  • The Trans Jordan Landfill also accepts hazardous waste, and is located at 10873 South 7200 West and is open Mondays through Saturdays from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon.
  • Commercial clients will have to take their hazardous waste to the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Facility at 6030 West California Avenue at 1400 South which is open from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon Monday through Saturday.
Murray Quick Facts

Murray was formerly known as South Cottonwood and was initially settled in 1849. The town is strategically situated between Big and Little Cottonwood Creeks, just eight miles south of Salt Lake City. The name of this beautiful city was taken from Eli Murray, who was the original territorial governor from 1880 to 1886. Murray quickly became an industrial hub. In 1859, the city constructed the Woodhill Brothers’ smelter 1869 and in 1870, Murray processed the first silver bars smelted in Utah. And the smelter industry continued to dominate the industry in Murray until 1950.
