Solid Waste, Preserving and Living in Bourbonnais

Those of us that love the outdoors love Bourbonnais in Kankakee County. The area that would become Kankakee County was termed “Te-yar-ac-ke” bu the Pottawatomi Indians to mean “wonderful land”. In the early Nineteenth Century, a fur trapper and trade of the American Fur Company arrived in the area that is now Bourbonnais and where he would marry a Native American woman and initiate the Village of Bourbonnais’ rich history that as has led to today where over eighteen thousand people live. Today the village is the home of the Strickler Planetarium, which is located on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University and strives to educate people about the natural world and the stars that early settlers gazed upon. If you like being in the beauty of nature, then the Village of Bourbonnais offer a treasure trove of activities including the Kankakee River State Park, the Bourbonnais Township Park District, and Perry Farm Park, with water activities at the Diamond Point Park and the Splash Pad, and opportunities to cycle with the Bike609 bike-share program.

Preserving Bourbonnais’ Natural Environment

In Bourbonnais, the value of nature is inherently understood and, from this knowledge, environmental preservation initiatives flow to protect the beauty of the areas as populations rise. Some of these programs include:

  • ComEd Energy Efficiency Program: In 2018, the Village of Bourbonnais partnered with ComEd to participate in the Municipal Street Light Energy Efficiency Program. This involves the upgrading of all street lights to energy-efficient LED technology to decrease energy consumption and costs, as well as decrease light trespass and pollution in the Village.
  • Paperless Meeting is an initiative of the Village of Bourbonnais and BoarDocs, a company that specializes in digitalization of paperwork for government groups and schools. BoardDocs innovative software has enabled the Village of Bourbonnais Board of Trustees to take old decision-making processes that printed large amounts of paper, especially as plans were revised and reprinted, and instead facilitates a paperless decision-making process for all Village Board and Committee Meetings.
  • Tree Planting in Bourbonnais is an initiative that began with a five hundred dollar grant from the Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School Foundation to the Emily and Andrew Phelps, children of Bourbonnais Police Chief Jim Phelps. The grant has enabled Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School students and corporations (ranging from local businesses to industries as far as Tennessee) to process much and plate over one hundred and ten trees at Bonaire, Medows, Meadowbrook, and Thirteen Acres parks. The initiative also worked with planted fifty-six trees Arborvitae Trees with the Village of Bourbonnais Public Works Department at Riverfront Park.
  • KRMA E-Waste Recycling: The Kankakee River Metropolitan Association (KRMA) has taken the lead on e-cycling in the county, using a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to set up two locations where users can responsibly dispose of reusable electronic materials, such as DVD Players, Televisions, and Printers.
  • Building a New Bike Path: Through grant programs under the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP), the Village of Bourbonnais is aspiring to build a  bike trail that would extend over two and one-half miles from Bethel Drive to Diamond Point Park. The Village hopes to create a beautiful environment to exercise in and also hopes to reduce the level of pollutants in the air by reducing the number of cars as people ride bikes to their destinations.
  • The Bike 609 Bike Share: Many of us don’t have bikes because we don’t use them often or just don’t have much space. But there are some days that we really want to go for a ride. The Village of Bourbonnais bridges this gap through its participation in a countywide bike share program facilitated by Zagster. If you would like to participate, the Bike 609 station located in Downtown Bourbonnais at University Avenue and Main Street, where you can choose from five cruiser bikes to rent for a great day out/ Residents and visitors can commute through the Village or sightsee and Kankakee County offers twenty-seven miles of bike trials.
