Disposing of Hazardous Waste

There are some things that cannot go into a dumpster bin. One of these things is household hazardous waste. But what is household hazardous waste? Well, The EPA defines household hazardous waste as leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients such as:

• Corrosive materials that can significantly corrode metals or may result in skin damage to a person are considered hazardous waste (e.g., bleach, ammonia, and other household cleaners).
• Toxic materials are those substances that are poisonous to a person and can cause illness or death (e.g., antifreeze and gasoline).
• Ignitable materials include any substance that has the potential to ignite during routine handling due to friction or heat sources, or contact with other chemicals (alcohol is a common example).
• Reactive Ingredients fall into a lesser-known category of hazardous waste that includes substances that tend to react spontaneously during routine handling, or that can react vigorously with air or water. It also includes substances that are unstable under conditions of shock or heat, can generate toxic gases, or even explode. Mixing bleach and ammonia is a common reactive combination that will expel a toxic gas.

Disposing of Tires

If you would like to dispose of your waste tires, please come visit our Pinal County Public Works Material Recovery Center at 12725 Adamsville Road in Florence. If you are a business that generates waste tires in Pinal County you will need to obtain a Pinal County Waste Tire Disposal Permit in accordance with local regulations.

• Residents may bring in up to five tires per person per year for free. After that, there will be an additional charge of one dollar per tire for tires from pickup trucks and cars.
• Semi-truck tires are charged at a cost of two dollars for each tire.
• Off-road vehicle tires and tractor tires are charged at a cost of one hundred and forty dollars per ton. Be sure to have them first weighed at a scale and the scale and get your ticket, which must be present when disposing of the tires.
