Hazardous Waste And What You Need To Know About It
The EPA organizes hazardous waste into 4 categories. Corrosivity, Ignitability, Reactivity, and Toxicity. They must meet and fall under the following letter codes. U, P, F, and K.
To meet the EPA test, a substance is classified as hazardous if it satisfies the following criteria and is mentioned on one of the 4 lists found in the Title 40 of the Code of Regulations.
The following substances are in the K group:
- Wood preservation
- Petroleum refinery products
- Coking processing
The F list is grouped as such:
- Multi-source Leachate
- Chlorinated hydrocarbons
- Spent solvent wastes
- Dioxin-bearing wastes
The P and U lists are commercial and pure grades of unused chemicals. These include 2-Propenal and Aldrin, and other chemicals that most people will never come in contact with or need not worry about. However, household hazardous waste should be something that all people should be aware of.
With that said, it is helpful to know how the EPA characterizes hazardous waste. Below are the 4 key traits that define a household hazardous waste.
- Ignitability: Material that can easily ignite.
- Toxicity: Waste that is detrimental if eaten or enters our bodies.
- Reactivity: Materials that come in contact with water and as a result toxic gas can be emitted.
- Corrosivity: Waste that has a pH less than 2 or greater or equal to 12.5 pH. For example, these materials can corrode steel.
It is imperative that we familiarize ourselves with the most basic household hazardous materials. Being aware of these dangerous substances can save your life and help protect our fragile ecosystems. Below is a brief list of the more common household hazardous wastes:
- Pool chemicals
- Drain cleaners
- Tub, tile, and shower cleaners
- Transmission fluids
- Toilet cleaners
There are quite a few more items that can be added to this list. It is a good idea to check out your local city hall website for more information. City Hall websites have a fountain of information. Doing a Google search will turn up tons of pages to help you to get up to speed.
Make sure you read all labels of every product you bring into the house to keep you and your family out of harm’s way. There are many alternative products you can use and your local supermarket is an excellent place to start.
Many “Green” products are available to the consumer today. And when it comes to our families and keeping our fragile eco-systems safe, we can never be too careful. So be cognizant of what you are bringing into your home and do a little shopping around.
Easy Dumpster Rental and like companies are banned from hauling hazardous waste. However, we are willing and able to take your non-hazardous and recycling materials to the local landfill or nearest recycling center. We have a wide variety of canister bins for any size project.
