Cape Canaveral History and Natural Environment

Cape Canaveral is a city in Brevard County, Florida.  The City began with a lighthouse in the 1800s that gradually expanded to today’s population of around ten thousand inhabitants. Modern-day Cape Canaveral is also the site of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, where the first phase of the United States space program was conducted before moving to the neighboring Kennedy Space Center.  The site is now a historic landmark and the location of the Air Force Space and Missile Museum.  Other sites in Cape Canaveral include the historic Cape Canaveral Lighthouse, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Canaveral National Seashore.

Green Efforts

Banana River Lagoon: The Indian River Lagoon consists of, Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River Lagoon, and Banana River Lagoon.  This inshore saltwater estuarine system is one of the largest and ecologically diverse of its kind, extending over one hundred and fifty miles and covering thirty percent of east Florida.  The City of Cape Canaveral seeks to protect the Banana River Lagoon through a number of initiatives, including:

  • Efforts to reduce debris runoff by the installation of baffle boxes to collect debris and sediment from the City’s stormwater system.
  • Monthly street sweeping of all curbed city streets.
  • The replacement of stormwater inlets that filter larger debris and vegetation from entering the system.
  • The use of exfiltration piping (perforated piping).
  • Construction of a reclaimed water tank that holds two and one-half million gallons to eliminate nearly all discharges of treated wastewater to the Banana River Lagoon.

Manatee Sanctuary Park: The Manatee Sanctuary Park was constructed to with funds from a grant from the Florida Communities Trust and Leisure Services funds. The development was implemented in several steps:

  • Mangroves were planted along the shoreline to create a natural habitat for fish and wildlife and as a stay against erosion.
  • A wet detention pond and improved stormwater swales were constructed to protect runoff to the Banana River Lagoon and its wildlife.
  • Over ten acres of green space was developed along the Banana River with a boardwalk for viewing wildlife, a pavilion with restrooms, and a walking and exercise trail.

The project, which is considered by many to be the pride of Cape Canaveral, has resulted in the development of a safe area where manatees can live peacefully an extensive green space for residents and visitors to view the manatees and other wildlife.
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) environmental restoration program (ERP):  Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) is the operational hub for the Eastern Range, occupying over fifteen thousand acres that extend from the Atlantic Ocean to the Banana River Lagoon and includes environmentally sensitive and ecologically diverse areas.  While the CCAFS has been important to space exploration, the historic endeavor has also taken a toll on the environment by releasing toxic industrial chemicals and fuels and industrial solvents that have resulted in over one thousand acres of contaminated groundwater (GW) and highly-contaminated source areas.  Additionally, the soil has been impacted by sandblasting with limited dispersion control.
As a result, the ERP Environmental Restoration Program (ERP) was established to identify, assess, investigate, and clean up existing contamination on the base.  The CCAFS environmental restoration program (ERP) in Florida works in coordination with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, St. Johns River Water Management District, and the National Estuary Program, regarding contaminated areas.

Solid Waste in Brevard County

Brevard County has four main facilities that process solid waste for residents of Cape Canaveral and Brevard County:

  • The Central Disposal Facility (CDF), located at 2250 Adamson Road in Cocoa, is also referred to as the Brevard County Disposal Facility.  The landfill uses a clay wall structure and expands over nearly one thousand acres.  The facility can receive tires (which are transferred to a processing facility), metals, and white goods (which it then diverts) and has a Household hazardous waste collection center.
  • The Sarno Transfer Station, located at 3379 Sarno Road, Melbourne.
  • The Titusville Transfer Station, located at 4366 South Street, Titusville.
  • The Mockingbird Mulching Facility, located at 3600 South Street, Titusville.
