Rock Island, from Black Hawk to Augustana College

In the early Nineteenth Century, Rock Island was the historic home of the famous leader of the Sauk Native American Tribe, Balck Hawk. As the U.S. Military took hold of the upper Mississippi, new settlers were drawn t the are that found new opportunities with from waterway trade routes. The shift would eventually lead to the demise of Black Hawk and force the Souk and Fox Tribes into a migrational retreat west. The areas grew as the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad were built and Rock Island eventually became the home of Augustana College.

The Green Initiatives of Rock Island

Rock Island benefits from the incredible natural beauty that is indignant of life on the Mississipi. The City also has beautiful architecture and colors that drive its residents and municipal leaders to preserve the environment and ambiance. The City has a number of such green initiatives. One of its methods of environmental protection is the development and implementation of technologies that can reduce energy usage.

City-level Environmental Initiatives: The City of Rock Island has a number of innovative systems designed to protect the environment including its purchase of a hydroelectric plant. The plant operates along the Rock River and is able to provide over half of the municipal electricity needs of the City’s facilities. Rock Island has also incorporated an environmental impact policy plan, the Environmental Impact Policy, to research the environmental impact of various functions of the community. Similarly, the City also contracted a Green House Gas Emissions Report that measures the carbon production of each family. The City has also reformed its facilities and service to be more environmental, replacing old traffic lights and street lighting with LED lights, replacing old air conditioners, upgrading to low-mercury devices, and using organic fertilizer on golf courses.

Business-level Environmental Initiatives: At the business level, the City seeks to foster and incentivize green programs and improvements. The Sustainable Business Incentives Program, for example, matches the amount of investment in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA). The amount provided by the City will be up to seventy-five percent with a  maximum of seven thousand and five hundred dollars. A similar program is available for improvements to facades of businesses through the Facade Improvement Program. Finally, the Brownfield Assistance will evaluate contaminated soil and help clean sites with funds from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),

Residential-level Environmental initiatives: The City encourages its residents to recycle all paper, aluminum, plastic and provides a drop-off center for easy disposal. It also promotes the use of Rain Gardens that can absorb rainwaters that would otherwise run into the drain system. Electric charging stations are offered for those of us that drive electric cars, thereby making green vehicles more easily used and convenient. And, finally, residents can participate in the City’s Adopt-a-Highway program, which works with Keep Rock Island Beautiful.
