The Types Of Dumps In The U.S.

The United States landfills are watched over by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The two major categories are Subtitle C dumps which provide a structure for overseeing hazardous debris. Landfills that fall under the auspices of Subtitle D oversee non-hazardous waste, for instance, a  solid waste facility. Dumps must meet strict design, operation and closure need set forth by the EPA. For example, after a dump is shut down it must be monitored for at least thirty years to ensure that there is no waste being leached into the ground and there is no pollution filling the air we breath.
As of now, America has approximately 3,100 active dumps, which is about one landfill for every county in the States. Subtitle D Landfills are used for the disposal of muni waste, degrading organic materials, industrial waste, C&D, and collecting material from coal combustion plants.
Subtitle D relies on local and state entities for the planning and regulation of solid waste. This waste is usually your stuff you throw into your garbage bin and any industrial waste that is nonhazardous. Subtitle D landfills include:

  • Municipal Solid Waste Landfills which is the garbage from home.
  • Bioreactor Landfills that functions to reconstruct and lessen organic materials.
  • Industrial Waste Landfills were made to take on commercial solid debris.
  • Construction and Demolition Debris Landfills receive materials from construction sites such as gravel.
  • Coal Combustion Residual Landfills gets rid of coal combustion waste.

Subtitle C Landfills as previously stated, deal with hazardous materials. The main issue with hazardous materials is that it must be handled in a secure process where no bad things can hurt our humans or the ecosystems. Besides hazardous waste dumps, there also are Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Landfills to consider as well.
PCBs are man-made organic materials which were used for wire insulation and electrical gadgets. Back in the late 60’s and 1970′ these materials were sprayed on dirt streets to keep dust from rising. But these substances were banned in the late 70’s.
Owner-operators must keep a watchful eye on Leachate, which is made from liquids that are already in the waste and moves through it. The leachate can cause particles that are a hazard to seep into our underground water. Dumps are required to have leachate collection systems which are composed of these 4 parts:

  • A collection layer.
  • A  filter.
  • A system of pipes which is surrounded by a bed of gravel.
  •  A pump which takes the leachate from the dump.

The EPA mandates that the dump monitor the aquifers. This is to make sure that there are no contaminants in our underground water.  This system consists of three aspects:

  • Detection
  • Assessment
  • Corrective measures

Then after a dump lifecycle is finished hit is shut down and is watched over for 3 decades.
