Steps That Are Being Taken So We Have Safer Landfill

With pollution, being the number one concern with landfills, regulations have been put in place to help mitigate this potential environmental threat. Landfill owner’s and potential owners must comply with laws where there are restrictions on where landfills cannot be erected. This includes the following sites wetlands, fault zones, floodplains, and near airports.
There are three types of waste disposal that landfills employ: Sanitary, Incineration, and Composting.
Incineration: This is considered the preferred method. This is because it can burn up to 80% of all trash and it does provide an energy source because of the heat that is generated. Typically this energy will be sold back to surrounding homes and businesses in the form of electricity. However, it does have its drawbacks because of the pollutants that are released into the air. But technology is in improving to capture the particulates that this method generates. But it is super expensive technology.
Composting: This is another method of disposing of waste. Though composting isn’t used much but the end results are the breaking down of the organic matter into a fertilizer. Thus, it takes trash and it becomes reusable. And it is a very inexpensive and a practical solution to preventing pollution. And many people use this in their backyard gardens.
Sanitary: The third alternative was once used in a bygone age what were once called open dumps. But now they use liners, collection systems for leachate, and underground water monitoring systems. These systems must also have a methane collection component too. The EPA oversees the designs of the liners and they must meet strict guidelines. And as with all landfills after they have closed they must be monitored for 30 years to make sure there is no air or water pollution seeping into our ecosystems.
According to the EPA, 250 million tons of trash is generated each year in the United States. Recycling and composting captured almost 90 million tons of waste in one recent year and by using these methods it helped cut down on pollution, especially carbon dioxide immensely.  This is equivalent of removing taking 45 million cars off the highways. Though we still have a long road to travel, reducing 1/3 of pollutants is a giant step in the right direction.
Though we have made giant strides, considering that 250 million tons figure, progress, slowly but surely, is being made. Back in the 80’s we only were diverting 15 million of waste a year. That has to be encouraging and hope is always springing eternal.
