We Need to “Try Harder” When It Comes To Recycling Efforts

Recycling is very important for the health of our environment. But it appears as a Nation we may not be recycling as much as we should. Landfill operators across the country are reporting that over 70% of all the trash they take in can actually be recycled. That is alarming. Every person I talk to swears up and down that they recycle. But I wonder.
Recycling is still a noble pursuit and we need to encourage all we meet to do their part. Recycling will help keep our lakes, oceans, and streams looking pristine and will protect sea life. If we would put more of an effort in our recycling we could begin closing landfills rather than trying to find money to build new ones. And we would experience less air and water pollution. And no one wants a landfill in their backyard. The financial strain it would be for a local government to build a new facility would be overwhelming.
It can cost a municipality up to 1 million dollars just for application and design engineering fees. And the cost to build the landfill could run into the millions. And most of the money would be covered by muni-bonds and that would come out of the taxpayers pocket. The average cost of a new landfill can run between $300,00 to $800,00 per acre.
There is roughly 250 million tons of consumer solid waste generated every year. 32% is recycled, 12% is burned and the remaining 55% is sent to landfills to be buried. We can greatly reduce these numbers by recycling.

A Sea (or 2) Of Plastic

Another big problem facing the world is the giant plastic patches in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. These giant patches are having a negative impact not only on water quality but on the fish we need to sustain life. Another issue is how long it takes for the plastic to break down. Estimates range from decades to hundreds of years. These patches aren’t small either. They are estimated to be the size of Texas And France.
