What to Do With Household Hazardous Waste?

When you work on your next project, you may find many things that are considered to be special waste or household hazardous waste. This can happen especially when a client cleans out a garage, shed, attic, bathroom, or kitchen and finds numerous items that they are not sure of. Medicines and sharps, chemicals, flammables, and explosives are all considered hazardous waste. And hazardous waste is prohibited from your trash bin and your dumpster bin alike.

So what do you do with these items? One option is to take hazardous waste to the Household Hazardous Waste Event. The Utah County Health Department often holds a Household Hazardous Waste Event in April at the SUVSWD Transfer Station for free at 2450 West 400 South in  Springville. You may bring in electronic waste (e.g., computers, gaming consuls, phones, monitors, etc.), paint thinner, paint, stain, oil, antifreeze, automotive products, household cleaners, batteries, pesticides, fertilizers, propane tanks, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, and sharps.

If you cannot make the event, you may bring in your hazardous waste to the South Utah Valley Solid Waste’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The facility accepts household quantities of things like paint, varnish, pesticides, lawn care products, aerosols, paint thinner, antifreeze, motor oil, diesel, gasoline, cleaning items, automotive products, rechargeable, and lead-acid batteries, etc. free of charge for county residents.

What to Do With Electronic Waste?

In addition, if you have electronic waste, you may also bring these items to the South Utah Valley Waste Facility. Electronic waste (e-waste) consists of consumer electronic equipment that is no longer wanted or that no longer works. Because of the increasing quantities of electronic waste, electronic waste is prohibited from garbage bins and dumps bins. But you can bring these items to the facility, including:

  • Older computer monitors, computers, and printers.
  • Flat-screen computer monitors and televisions.
  • DVD players, stereos, VCRs, and elctrioic games..
  • Cell phones, Fax machines, Microwaves.

Please be advised that the South Utah Valley Solid Waste District will accept 6 or fewer of any one type of item including hazardous and electronic waste.

It’s that easy!
