Recycling in Dunedin

The city of Dunedin is utilizing Single Stream Recycling program city-wide. Which means that the city residents are provided with one recycling cart which can be wheeled to the curb for weekly collection by the city-contracted private waste company. Residents get this service at no additional cost. Residents can recycle many items as long the items are empty. More items that we can accept in recycling bin less amount of waste is going to the landfill.
Accepted items for recycling are:

  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Food and beverage Cartons
  • Aluminum, tin, and steel cans
  • Glass bottles and jars (No other types of glass)
  • Paper, cardboard, and paperboard (Flattened)
  • Plastic bottles and containers #1-7 (no Styrofoam, plastic bags, or wrap)

Not accepted items are:

  • Any Styrofoam packaging or food containers
(Unused Styrofoam can be taken back to Publix)
  • Plastic bags and plastic wrap
(Unwanted plastic bags can be dropped off at Publix or reused for pet waste)
  • Hazardous materials/electronics
(Can take to Pinellas County HEC3 facility. Click here for more info)
  • Construction materials
  • Yard debris

Single stream recycling is a recycling collection method where all materials are collected and mixed in one container. The recycle-trash is then transported to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and sorted using state of the art facility & equipment such as magnets, conveyor belts, screens,  and optical sorters.
If you would like to drop off recycling materials yourself, the city has two recycling centers available 24 hours per day for residents and businesses. These two locations are conveniently located at:

  • Lake Haven Recycling Center – 810 Lake Haven Rd. (behind solid waste)
  • Highlander Pool-Immediately south of Fire Station 61 at 1941 Ed Eckert Drive

At Lake Haven Recycling Center residents can drop-off mulch to recycle and also pick up mulch if they need it, free of charge. The mulch is safe to use as it is processed using the University of Florida’s procedure for mulch sterilization. The process kills plant pathogens and weed seeds. Please bring a shovel and a good sized vehicle as this is a self-serve and self-haul program.

The Economic Benefits Of Recycling

There are many economic benefits of recycling. According to The National  Recycling Coalition, programs and centers that are running on all  8 cylinders, so to speak, often cost less to operate than landfills. One major American city felt that recycling was a huge waste of monetary resources costing the city $40 million a year. But after doing some research on how to improve their recycling efforts they turned that loss into a $20 million savings. Recycling creates over a million jobs a year and adds $40 billion in yearly payrolls. In 10 years, recycling diverted 70 million tons of materials from landfills, up from 40 million tons.
Are you aware that every ton of paper recycled saves 20 trees? This may not seem like a lot but take it out it exponentially and that is a lot of paper.  There is a massive deforestation problem in this world, especially in the Amazon Rain Forest and we are going to have big problems if our trees continue to disappear. It takes less energy to recycle certain materials that do make it from its raw form. So as you can see recycling has many advantageous benefits. Another thing to keep in mind that landfill operators report that over 70% of the debris they receive is materials that can be recycled. If everybody became a little more diligent, we could as a society get achieve zero waste. Which isn’t a pipe dream. Many major corporations have gotten to the point that they have all their waste recycled and have achieved zero waste.

Some Great Tips to Help You On Your Way To Recycle

Most cities and counties today make it very simple to recycle. The city will provide either for free or at a nominal cost special recycling bins for your convenience. If you check out your local city hall website they will usually have a list of what you can and cannot recycle. Plus a ton of very useful information concerning recycling. In addition, many cities offer Single Stream Recycling to make it a lot simpler for you to recycle. And if you live out in a rural area and the county doesn’t provide recycling bins, Easy Dumpster Rental has a 10- cubic yard bins that are perfect to meet your recycling needs. And we will transport your recycling materials to a recycling center for you. Therefore saving you a lot of time and money verse using a pickup truck.
Debris you can recycle include aluminum cans, steel cans, newspapers, most plastics, and glass to name just a few items. For a more comprehensive list go to your city hall website or do a Google search. Composting is another great form of recycling that is easy and will help improve the vegetable garden. Almost all your yard waste can be used for compost including leaves, twigs, and flowers. Much of your food waste such as egg shells, coffee grounds, tea leaves and tea bags. Also, dead insects and vacuum bag contents can be used for composting. All of these materials will be less waste that would otherwise go to our already overcrowded landfills. It doesn’t take much effort on your part to recycle and by doing so, will go along way to keeping our fragile eco-system healthier for us and future generations.
