Environment, Composting and Lighthouse Point’s Roots

Lighthouse Point is a city located in Broward County in southeast Florida.  The city was named after the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse on Hillsboro Beach. As many boaters will testify, shallow depths in Florida can be hazardous, and the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse marks the most northern point of the Florida Reef.  The historic lighthouse is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Environmental Protection

Lighthouse Point is dedicated to the protection of the environment.  In pursuit of this, the City has a number of programs including:

  • The City replaced its sprinklers with more efficient systems and offers free sprinkler surveys to reduce water consumption.
  • An official Recycling Day or Environmental Day.
  • The City reduces fuel consumption through more efficient vehicles.
  • The City put in place the Permeable Paver System, which reduced soil runoff.
  • The municipal government implemented solar-powered lights in streets and a City parking lot and replaced the old lighting at the Frank McDonough Park and Dan Witt Park sports fields with green technology.

In addition, the City has several accomplishments in environmental stewardship including:

  • The Arbor Day Foundation named Lighthouse Point a Tree City USA for its dedication to urban forestry.
  • Winner of the Emerald Award for Environmental Excellence by Broward County.
  • Ranked at the top of Broward cities for recycling per capita.
  • The City is designated as a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
  • Lighthouse Point had the first LEED Certified Residential Home in Broward County.
Composting in Brevard County

Environmental disposal of waste often involves the separation of materials that can be recycled or disposed of outside the landfill. One such method is to compost.  Unlike many more complex environmental initiatives, such as green energy or single-stream recycling, composting is a simple process involving the following steps.

  1. Build or by composting equipment. Compost units can be purchased and are sometimes referred to as “holding unites” or “tumbling units.”  Compost piles can be built in a dry, shady spot near a water source or build a bin container.
  2. Place materials in composting bins. Appropriate items include raw fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, eggshells, bread, lettuce, apple cores, fruit peels, grass clippings, leaves, and small branches (layer materials by type if possible).
  3. To speed the process, turn materials once a week to even out the heat in the compost.
  4. The process is complete when composted materials become brittle and can be used for landscaping or gardening.
Composting Campaign Revolution

Brevard County not only advocates for the use of private composting but has also begun to incorporate the process in their kitchen areas of the following Brevard County offices:

  • The Environmental Licensing and Building Permitting Division.
  • The Solid Waste and Recycling Services.
  • Enterprise Technology Services.
  • Animal Care Division.
  • The Highway Construction and Engineering Division.
  • Pollution Prevention.
  • Remediation and Air Quality.
  • The Transit Division.

The Recycling Process in Brevard County

Brevard County recycling seeks to remove as much recyclable material from the stream that will go to the landfills.  Through its Single Stream Recycling plant and recycling programs, Brevard County has increased the amount of recycled waste that is diverted from landfills from forty-five percent to fifty-five percent.  As a result, Brevard County was ranked second in Florida for recycling in 2015, outdone only by Martin County’s sixty-two percent rate.  The County’s recycling process involves the following steps:

  1. Recyclables are collected through recycling containers and collected by the County at the curbside in single containers that hold all recyclables or collected at recycling centers.
  2. Trucks enter the tipping floor where they are dumped and checked by staff for contamination.
  3. The waste travels by conveyor belt and purged of metals by a large magnet.
  4. Plastic and aluminum are then separated out and sent for processing.  Glass, cardboard, magazines, and newspaper are sent to separate recyclers.
  5. Recycles product reenter the market after processing.
It’s that easy!
