Homewood Economic and Environmental Progress

The village of Homewood is a successful suburb of the City of Chicago that began as far back as the 1830s. Since railroad tracks were set in 1853 the Thornton Flour Mill Company established its mill in the same year, the village grew gradually. I the 1920s, great interest in Homewood kindled new developments, streets, and infrastructure and but at the end of the Second World War the village experienced a population explosion that has launched it to its current population of more than nineteen thousand residents.

Today, economic development remains a priority of the Village government as well as environmental development. Some of these programs include:

  • The Façade and Property Improvement Program is designed to revitalize properties. This objective is pursued by providing financial assistance to improve and maintain existing commercial and mixed-use buildings. The Program also promotes better exterior ambiance through and architectural and design assistance, modernization through upgrade assistance, and consulting on code compliance, thus improving overall marketability.
  • The Retail Enhancement Program is an incentive program directed to exiting retail businesses that strive to help businesses expand in a way that expands operations and, thereby, promotes and reinforces retail mix and diversity.
  • The Go Green Reward Program uses Tax Incrementing Financing (TIF) to promote sustainability initiatives for businesses within five identified TIF districts. Sustainability efforts include things like clean water initiatives, energy conservation, and clean air technologies. If you are eligible, the Go Green Reward Program will pay half of the cost of the energy audit (two thousand and five hundred dollars maximum) plus additional funds for approved improvements.
  • Major development or redevelopment project assistance is also available for properties located within the TIF districts. This support is designed to provide development beyond the Facade and Property Improvement Program, the Retail Enhancement Program, and the go Green Reward Program. The program offers property acquisitions, tax incentives, demolition for new construction projects and renovations.
Using a Dumpster Responsibly

In the case of any development project, waste and debris will be produced. Waste is often the sign of progress, as new renovation, home, factories, and businesses tend to tear out the old and replace these items with new things. At the same time, it is important to ensure that your dumpster is as environmentally responsible as possible. There are a couple of ways to do this. In the first case, many people separate their recycling so that it never has a chance of getting to a landfill. This also saves space in your dumpster container for things that are a cost to the process. Another option is to use a dumpster bin for a particular type of waste. For example, if you limit your waste to yard waste or construction and demolition debris then you can save money on your dumpster because there is no need to sort your trash. Additionally, most specialized waste types have been targeted for environmental processing and can be more effectively used if taken to a specialized facility.

There are a number of locations that you can haul recycling or excess waste:

  • East Hazel Crest Transfer Station located at 17450 Laflin in East Hazel Crest, IL.
  • Park Forest Transfer Station at 25 South Street in Park Forest, IL.
  • Valparaiso Transfer Station at 3101 Bertholet Drive in Valparaiso, IN.

A second way to use your dumpster container in an environmental way is required by law. Hazardous waste and electronic waste is banned from landfills and cannot be placed in your dumpster container or your trash container. As follows is a list of hazardous waste facilities:

  • In Naperville, you can go to 156 Fort Hill Drive.
  • Chicago has a hazardous waste site at 1150 N. North Branch.
  • In Rockford, you can get your hazardous waste taken at 3333 Kishwaukee in the Rock River Reclamation District.

Electronics can be processed and recycled through the following locations:

  • Burr Ridge accepts hazardous waste at its Public Works Facility at 451 Commerce Street.
  • Downers Grove Township accepts hazardous waste at its Highway Department Garage at 318 Quincy Street in Westmont.
  • Elmhurst Public Works Facility at 985 S. Riverside Drive can accept special waste.
  • Lisle has a drop-off site at its Commuter Parking Lot B located at 925 Burlington Avenue in Lisle.
  • Naperville accepts hazardous waste at the Naperville Environmental Collection Campus located at 180 Fort Hill Drive.
