Going Green in Mokena

Mokena and Will County work to preserve their way of life with a number of environmental plans to help maintain the quality of living in their communities through the Will County Land Use Department’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division (RR&E). Some of these initiatives include:

• The Will County Energy Plan: The Will County Energy Plan falls under the Will County Land Use Department, which, with approval from the Will County Community Development Advisory Board, is tasked to oversee plans for conservation fo energy across the country and has authored the Countywide Energy Efficiency and Conservation Plan.
• Will County also supports a number of green projects under the Energy Efficient Projects initiative. Some of these include the Cool Roof project, which funded the removal of an old roof on the Emco building to rebuild the facility with more than six weeks of insulations. Another such program was the Green Roof program which restructured the Will County County Office Building with reinforcements so that could hold trees. Despite the cost of the project, the idea of trees on top of the roof was reconsidered and plants were used instead. Other programs rehabilitate a number of areas within a facility, such as a program at the Highway Administrative Office Building, which improved the efficiency of the electrical systems and lighting.
• The Will County Landfill Gas-to-Energy Facility is another testament to the County’s work. Funding made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and Department of Energy (Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant) that assisted the County in building the nine million-dollar gas-to-energy facility. The resulting gas-to-energy plant takes in the majority of methane gas generated by the landfill to generators that will turn the gas into electricity that can power from two thousand homes to three thousand and eight hundred homes and it is expected that the plant will eventually power seven thousand and eight hundred homes.  GTE plant is projected to power 7,800 homes annually. The cost of the plant was approximately $9 million and the County partnered with Waste Management to build and fully fund the cost. The County contributed $1 million of the EECBG funds and the county owns the gas rights as the owner of the landfill.
