St. Charles: A Green City

The City of St. Charles takes a great deal of care to promote environmentally clean development and living. Located forty miles west of Chicago in Kane and DuPage County, the City offers a reservoir of peace from the urban life and a pristine environment that is worth keeping.  This environmental focus has driven the city into a number of projects that are designed to maintain green spaces and reduce the footprint created by the area’s continually increasing population. Some of the City’s and County’s key green programs include the following:

  • Green Power: The green power program is run by the St. Charles Municipal Electric Utility. The program offers opportunities for customers to make a contribution on their monthly electric bill to the City. The City, in turn, uses the additional payments to purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) which are used to purchase renewable energy generated from in the country through hydroelectric generators, wind farms, and landfill gas collection. One year, for example, the city purchased one thousand three hundred and sixty mega-watt hours the Green Power Program, which could power over three hundred and thirty homes for over one year. If you would like to contribute to his program through the Renewable Generation Energy Purchase (RGEP) you can do so by filling out the Green Power Enrollment Form.
  • Wind Energy: Wind is something that those of us in the Greater Chicago Area know to be an abundant resource.  Although wind power is known to be hazardous to avian life forms, it does produce energy with slightly less of an overall footprint than some other forms of power generation. As such, St. Charles Municipal Electric Utility is working with  Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA) to purchase two seventy megawatts of capacity under a long-term project with NextEra Energy and fifty megawatts un conjunction with Geronimo energy. IMEA is a nonprofit organization that adjoins thirty-two municipalities in the area to facilitate environmental cooperation.
  • The Committee for Fleet Management and Hybrid Vehicles: Have you ever wondered about all of the vehicles that are used by any city and the footprint those vehicles make on the environment? While municipal governments require transportation, it can also be organized to minimize environmental damage. Members of a range of City municipal departments work on the St. Charles Committee for Fleet Management and Hybrid Vehicles have downsized the number of vehicles that are used by the City and have purchased two hybrid vehicles used by the Police Department and the Department of Community Development.
  • Electronic Vehicle Charging Station: Electric cars may be great, but where do you charge them? This is the problem for many people that might be happy with an electric car but are worried that they will not be able to easily access a charging station. The City of St. Charles understands this barrier to personalized green energy systems, like electric cars, and has installed an electronic charging port at the parking garage and offers tow chargers that may be used for two hour periods for free! The funding is made available through a matching grant by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
  • The LED Street Light Program: LED street lights are actually more expensive than the older technologies used to light streets but use less energy. Therefore, they save money but only after enough time has passed to recover the energy savings. The City is currently evaluating several locations where they may place the lights.
