Urbana: The Big Grove

Urbana IL was originally known as the “Big Grove” where the city sits surrounded by rolling terrain and majestic trees where the first home was established in 1822. Urbana is now the home of the sister campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and incredible restaurants, such as Big Grove Tavern.  The University of Illinois is considered the largest university in Illinois with campuses in Urbana, Champaign, and Chicago.

Going Green in Urbana

Green living to the City of Urbanaprotectingtecting the environment. With the resident university, it is possible to research and create a number of green programs to help preserve the natural environment. Some are newly innovated programs, while others are seen elsewhere. As follows are a few green programs offered by Urbana and the State of Illinois:

On-Campus Sustainability: The Bevier Cafe is a part of the campus tradition at the University of Illinois where many students dine, but it is also a site to develop sustainability programs with students of the Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN). Three such programs have been developed at the Cafe through funding by the Student Sustainability Committee (SSC. These programs include:

The Bevier Cafe Reusable Carry-out program. This Program has led to building habits of using reusable carry-out containers that look like green Tupperware. The Program has around one hundred and fifty members.  But the numbers add up as repeated meals save boxes from going to landfills and, it is estimated nearly three thousand visits to the eatery have been done with reusable boxes thus far.

The Development of an Aquaponics System: An Aquaponics Systems more easily understood as the coming together of fish farming and hydroponics, or the development of liquids that are rich in nutrients. In this case, the university developed a system to take water that in which fish have excreted their waste and to drain this water into a soil bed and then returning the water to the fish while using the nutrients for agriculture.

Bevier Cafe’s Herb Garden: The Bevier Cafe also has an indoor herb garden that was created using space that was the old hallway of a former fire exit. The Cafe takes pride that it herbs are made fresh on campus and argues that the climate benefits from reduced transportation of moving herbs from warmer climates to the cafe.

Urbana Sustainability Projects

The City of Urbana beyond the university.  Some of these programs include a number of business sustainability objectives.

  • One way to incentivize more environmentally friendly industries is to make improvements that pay off right away. That is why the City offers to fund an amount equal to five percent of a business’s energy-efficient project when it reduces energy usage by ten percent or more under the TIF District Energy Incentives. The City also offers rebates for energy-saving measures through the Ameren ActOnEnergy Incentives.
  • If you want to research energy incentives across the country to maximize your savings, the All Illinois Energy Incentives offers The Database of State Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE).
  • The Business Recycling Service can also help provide recycling services for businesses. Similarly, the Illinois Green Business Association is designed to similarly help businesses to find the social and environmental utility in green-certified choices.
  • Would you like an expert consultant to look at your business and tell you what you need to reduce energy and save money?  The Smart Energy and Design Assistance Center offers just that with the goal of increasing business energy efficiency across the state. The State also offers a similar program of expert consultants that can come to a site and advise on energy-efficient solutions and management systems through the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) at the Prairie Research Institute.
