Richton Park was in part awarded the designation for helping solar companies to reduce the cost of installation using tax money and then passing the saving back to their residents and taxpayer. the process involved changing local processes to stream-line solar investments and financial incentives for solar power investments.
• The Wind Turbine (Bergey) Program: Wind turbines are a controversial element of sustainable energy promotion. In 2010, Richton Park constructed the first wind turbine in Southland of Chicago that it has named Bergey. Bergy was erected with the help of an Illinois Renewable Clean Energy Grant that paid half of the ninety-nine thousand dollar cost. The structure stands at one hundred and twenty feet in height and moves at a speed of five miles per hour and can handle winds over one hundred miles per hour. The turbine produces energy offsets of about four percent of the required electrical demand of Righton Park’s new community center.
