The Two Main Classes of Landfills In America

In 1976 Congress enacted the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act(RCRA). Moreover, it is the main law overseeing the disposal of hazardous materials and solid waste. Generally speaking, there are two types of landfills, Subtitle “C” and Subtitle “D”.

  • Subtitle “C” deals with all of the hazardous waste that is generated in the U.S. When the waste is collected by specially designed trucks it is taken to a plant for treatment. Incineration is the mode of destroying this waste and is very good at destroying the toxins that are emitted by hazardous materials. Oftentimes boilers are used to capture heat then, in turn, is used as a source of energy usually electricity to power nearby homes and businesses.
Other types of subtitle “C “landfills include:

    • Construction and demolition will accept construction waste, demolition materials, and debris that is typically found on roadworks.
    • Industrial Landfills usually accept waste that cannot be dropped off at a solid waste facility. Non-hazardous materials and the like.
  • Subtitle “D” landfills deal with solid waste or MSW. This is the garbage you take to the tree lawn each week. The modern landfill of today is pretty hi-tech and must meet very stringent government regulations to be licensed. If you remember times past the dumps of yesteryear that reeked to hi-heaven but most of these have been shut down and replaced by cleaner environmentally friendlier landfills.
Some of the regulations include heavy-duty liners to protect the soil and our underwater aquifers from leachate. This liner serves other purposes as well. It helps keep the stench down and/or completely eliminates it. Reduces rodent activity, and cuts down on litter.

After these landfills are shut down, they must be monitored for a thirty-year period. A careful eye is watching and ensuring that there is no air pollution and contamination of our drinking water, lakes, rivers, and streams.

It’s that easy!
