Although we all work to reduce pollution and garbage in our personal lives, a commercial business also generates a great deal of waste and risk to the environment. We cannot rid ourselves of business because it provides for most of our needs, but we can promote more environmental stewardship in our business communities. One method that is used in Niles and across the country and world is to simply recognize the important work that many businesses do to protect the environment. The Village of Niles Green Business Award does just that. any business may fill out an application to compete in the award, which is given on the basis of environmentally responsible practices, such as:

• Save energy.
• Reduce the production of waste.
• Conserve water.

In 2015, for example, BBJ Linen won the Green Business Award. BBJ Linen rents fine linen products from table linens to napkins for things like weddings, corporate events, political events, and other gatherings. BBJ took designed a multifaceted strategy to reduce their environmental impact that, in the end, got them the award:

First, the group reduced waste by recycling fabrics and some linen. For example, a tablecloth could be refashioned into totes for showing. They also work in the other direction of the environmental circle: some linens are made from plastic bottles.

• As you can imagine, BBJ goes through a lot of washing to continually send out clean fabrics events, after which they become rather dirty. The company bought a new washing machine that, instead of using over three gallons of water per load, uses less than one gallon of water. Water is also filtered before it is returned to the ecosystem.
• Energy conservation was also attained through the purchase of low energy light bulbs that are responsible to light eighty thousand square feet of the warehouse. These lights also have motion detectors to turn off automatically if there are no people in the area. in addition, a new water heating system was installed for greater efficiency.
